Suggesting a proper iPad handwriting user interface for lefties

Since about the first moment I bought my iPad for project management purposes, I have been looking for a perfect solution to utilize the device in a way that will get me rid of any paper-work. Since there’s quite a lot of handwriting note-taking apps out there, as well as a whole range of various styli (styluses), I have been going through a few of them and trying them out in the field.

The solutions out there are fairly satisfying… but only for the right-handed users. The specifics of wrist positioning with left-handed writing did not allow me personally to find piece with any of the available apps.

The image below represents a suggestion I have sent to the guys at Ginger Labs, authors of Notability app for iPad. The application offers a great option to combine a zoom-box with a wrist-zone (inactive grey zone that does not register any strokes or input). However, the wrist position of left-handed writing still does not allow to use these interface capabilities for a perfect handwriting experience.

My suggestion was the following:

Turku 2011 – European Capital of Culture, pixel art project

Throughout the year of 2011 Turku, Finland carried a title of the “European Capital of Culture”. Inspired by traditions of this wonderful city, I have spent close to a year for the creation of this pixel art project. Initially, it was meant for a wide public in a form of a 2k piece puzzle. However, due to a time-stretch and complications in licensing and production, it is now a mere piece in my personal collection. Please enjoy :)

Pixel Art Vehicles

Some of the vehicles I have created in an isometric pixel art style.

Student apartment decoration contest entry

An attempt to make a panoramic photo of a student apartment room.

Pixel Art

My first attempt to create a pixel art. Never worked with it before, but this method of drawing is a perfect way to spend 2-3 hours of your day in a total concentration ;-)

iPhone art (part 2). Brushes App, Star Wars Clone Trooper, speed painting

After spending about 3.5 hours on drawing and 12 hours on multiple renderings (Sony Vegas just doesn’t allow to increase the speed more than 3x times without using envelopes that mess everything up), here’s the result. My previous works in Brushes App on the iPhone were mere replays of the sequence and didn’t show the live drawing process. Therefore I consider this one an achievement.

Pogo Sketch stylus I used for this one did an amazing job and felt very natural after few hours of practicing. Enjoy ;)

2012 Apocalypse Contest winning image

Our local radio had hosted a 2012 movie inspired contest, the substance of which was to create an image that will place you (in this case my girlfriend) into an office, room or house destroyed by natural disaster. This one was my entry, which ended up getting the prize.

P.S. the winning prize was a 13″MacBook

Facebook graffiti (Yoda)

One big disadvantage of an application: after an hour and a half of placing layers of strokes, the lag becomes so unbearable that the only thought is to finish the drawing asap. Put a lot of effort here into the head details. Clothing, however, was rushed through for a mentioned reason. Nevertheless, the focus was maid clear in here; after all, who cares about what Yoda is wearing? :)

Can also be seen in HD on a YouTube.

iPhone art (part 1)

Who would ever imagine being able to create graphics on the mobile phone just as we do in Photoshop just couple years ago? Seems like now the doubt has vanished. As a big fan of graffiti flash-based applications on different social network websites, I found being able to use an exact same set of tools on the phone greatly fascinating.

This is is a record of a drawing made on the iPhone with the use of Brushes application, a finger and a bit of a skill in graphics.

Later on I will post a video which captures the process of drawing captured by a DV camera. For now it is a mere replay video. Enjoy!
